Per results announced on January 4, Justice & Unity won 4 of 9 listener seats, making its current listener delegation Suzanne Adely, Fr. Luis Barrios, John Brinkley, William Heerwagen, Ray Laforest, Fr. Lawrence Lucas, Cerene Roberts, Sharonne Salaam, and Bernard White. Producer John Riley was also elected, joining Bob Lederer as a J&U staff ally. The balance on this year’s board will be the same as it has been for two years. We will be 11 of 24.
More detailed results are below. But it seems clear that Steve Brown/ACE’s “Big Lie” technique — falsely claiming that J&U wanted to sell WBAI, along with other deceptive statements and tactics — worked. This victory for their side, despite our candidates repeatedly pointing out that Brown himself — up for re-election later this year — in a public email last summer called for selling not just WBAI, but all 5 Pacifica stations.
We are so grateful to all of you who voted for our candidates, donated toward our mailing, or supported the efforts in other ways. We will need an even broader-based effort to win the next election, for which nominations open in June. Please stay in touch.
Toward the future
Meanwhile, Justice & Unity will build on an important recent victory. We’ve consistently urged station management to move into more affordable studio space. And it’s finally taking place. Management and others will mostly likely say the move is required because of the recent hurricane. Yet, just five months ago, the board majority rejected board member Bernard White’s motion urging management to quickly move to another location. We believe our pressure and our efforts made a difference. The move will save the station a great deal of money. We will also be intimately involved in conversation about how to maximize the station’s interim studio at City College in Harlem, maintain essential connections while operating out of 2 or 3 separate locations, and effectively raise funds to finance a permanent WBAI home.
Despite our continuing board minority, with your support and participation, Justice & Unity will work tirelessly to return the station to Pacifica’s core mission, and the needs of oppressed communities.
We urge you to attend the first meeting of the new board, at which officers and Pacifica board members will be elected. You are encouraged to participate in public comment (usually 2 minutes per person), to voice your views on how to make WBAI stronger and more resilient for the future.
