WBAI is in extreme financial crisis, despite the move of its studios from Wall Street to much less expensive quarters. The station is now facing a lawsuit by the Empire State Building, where our broadcast antenna sits, seeking not merely payment of delinquent rent ($50,000 per month), but also our eviction. If that occurs, it would mean the end of WBAI’s ability to broadcast!
Local and national management did not share this information with either the Pacifica National Board or the WBAI Local Station Board.
Recently, the suit came to the attention of Nia Bediako, the Justice & Unity member who made possible the studio move to Harlem’s City College. An outgoing member of the Pacifica National Board, she has written both the national and local boards urgently calling for accountability and the presentation of specific plans by the manager for catching up and keeping up with the antenna’s rent. (Full text of her email is here.)
We urge you to come out during both the National Board and Local Station Board meetings and speak out during public comment. The times for public comment during the National Board meeting have not yet been announced. We will post the information on www.justiceunity.org and update our hotline, 212-591-2111, as soon as we know them – so keep checking back.
