We Are All We Have And It Is Enough
Dear WBAI Family,
Perhaps you don’t normally vote in WBAI elections, but things are NOT normal.
Please vote in these Local Station Board Delegate elections. It will make a difference.
My experiences as a founder of People United for Children which changed laws for families involved with NY’s foster care system and my life as mother of one of the Exonerated 5–from their arrests in 1989 to the 2022 naming of the Central Park “Gate of the Exonerated” illustrates how media imbedded in the community can help build momentum for social change.
WBAI is where ordinary people turn to get our words out and must remain a tool for community action. We must rebuild and strengthen our station.
Please take a few minutes to read the below letter from my colleague Cerene Roberts. And, to paraphrase Bernard White, pay close attention.
Yours,
Sharonne Salaam

Dear WBAI Friends,
My name is Cerene Roberts. I am a member of the WBAI Justice & Unity Campaign running for a Listener seat on the Local Station Board.
I ask for your high ranking in the ongoing Local Station Board election where listener-members are electing 9 listener Delegates and staff members are electing 3 staff Delegates.
I urge you to also rank candidates from Justice & Unity, Pacifica FightBack, and SANE (Stewardship, Accountability, Non-aggression and Engagement). Assigning the ranking shown below for each recommended candidate will increase the likelihood of a functioning board majority.
For 15 years, the current INDYPENDENT / ACE Local Station Board majority has failed to vote on budgets, annually evaluate management, determine community needs, insist on programming policies or legal hires, or regularly report on the station and network.
This needs to change.
You are not required to rank all 28 listener candidates or, if you're staff, to rank all 8 staff candidates. In fact, that could be counterproductive so I urge you to rank only those listed below.

The election supervisor is resisting requests for paper ballots and the cut-off date is likely Sept. 16 or so. Even when prepared to pay for the use of a 3rd party mailing house to guarantee your privacy, earlier this year, we were denied the opportunity to share our concerns about actions of the Pacifica National Board.
