WBAI has been struggling financially for many years and is teetering on the brink. Breaking up the network in “an amicable divorce” and selling off parts “while they still have value” have been proposed by leaders and allies of the Indy Caucus-ACE crew.
In what is arguably one of the shakiest times in the station’s modern history, the Indy Caucus/ACE half of the board has been staging a boycott hoping that lawsuits on the East and West coasts will return to them a majority that last year’s voters took away. In the meantime, some unidentified person(s) is/are quietly trying to block hardship membership waivers for listeners who love the station but are unable to give money or volunteer in time to vote or run. (Most volunteers used to answer phones during fund drives but that 24-7 opportunity no longer exists.)
Justice & Unity is committed to expanding the table and ensuring seats for New York’s diverse communities. We urge you to secure your membership now so you can vote for people who represent your interests.
To vote, a listener must, between July 1, 2015, and 11:59 pm on Thurs., June 30, 2016, COMPLETE one of the following:
- Give at least $25. Join or renew your membership at www.wbai.org/donate.php
- Volunteer 3 hours. It may be too late to do that now but see here: http://www.wbai.org/volunteers-interns.php
- Apply for a hardship waiver. To obtain an application, call 212-726-2334 or email wbaihardshipwaivers@gmail.com. Completed applications must be RECEIVED BACK by June 30.
