The WBAI Justice and Unity Campaign was formed in 2003 with the goal of keeping WBAI true to its mission of keeping the voices of the voiceless on the airwaves of WBAI. The group is a coalition of activists from the Black Liberation, Haitian, Latino, LGBT, AIDS activist, anti-imperialist, and working class movements in the tri-state area. Justice and Unity has fought to keep radical community focused programs from and by oppressed communities on the air. It also has helped raise funds and recruit new listeners and members for the station.
During each election for the Local Station Board, Justice & Unity runs a slate of listener candidates committed to this program of work. We are a grassroots community organization, but we do need donations to remain viable. Our main expense is a mass mailing to the membership of the station during election years at WBAI (2 out of every 3 years).
Justice & Unity has fought for changes in Pacifica’s structure to take the money out of its board elections, repeatedly raising proposals at the Pacifica National Board’s Election Committee. But our efforts have been blocked by the persistent, strident opposition of multi-millionaire candidate, former boardmember Steve Brown and his allies. It is vital that the Pacifica by-laws be amended to eliminate the corrupting influence of unlimited use of personal wealth.

Donations Urgently Needed:
Because Pacifica’s current rules allow unlimited use of money to shape our elections, in order to win seats on the Board we must compete with the slick, expensive, deceptive marketing campaign by multi-millionaire candidates who are current and previous board members. Our mailing happens with donated labor, and loans and gifts from listeners and staff like you. Please donate as you can.
