Co-founder/first Technical Director, Democracy Now!; co-creator/host/ engineer, Wakeup Call & Emanations; former staff rep, WBAI Local Advisory Board.
I’m a longtime listener and subscriber to WBAI, and proud to be running for the Local Station Board with Justice & Unity (justiceunity.org). I started listening to and supporting WBAI as a high-school student in the ’60s. Radio back then was a means of linking you to the whole wide world, and BAI was the one station that did it the best. WBAI was my classroom of the air… (read more)
I’m retired from the New York City Board of Education and Nassau County’s Uniondale School District, where I often incorporated WBAI programs, especially “Democracy Now,” “Talk Back,” and “Jordan Journal” into my lessons. My students were fascinated with the wide range of programming, and some even encouraged their parents to listen… (read more)

Audio-visual media specialist who knows corporate media will not lead to the people’s freedom. Focus: Off-air fundraising and programming for the informational needs of those beyond the 5 boroughs.
An adamant WBAI listener for 25 years, I was introduced to the station and immediately drawn to Elombe Brath’s show, Afrikaleidoscope, which cemented my appreciation for activist-oriented community media. WBAI’s impact inspired my decision to independently produce my own Public Access show, The Melanin Chronicles. I learned quickly and directly of the many ethical and social responsibilities, production skills and tasks, and the culturally-conscious demands of the journalistic process, particularly with respect to critical issues that relate to the lives of working class people, and how to synthesize raw authenticity with zeal and action-centered solutions for the people… (read more)
I‘m seeking re-election to the WBAI Local Station Board with the Justice & Unity Campaign–endorsed by several progressive organizations including Larry Hamm and The People’s Organization for Progress–because I want to see the station continue to be a strong voice for the 99%. Recently, working with P.O.P., we were able to get a donated billboard advertising WBAI placed on the NJ Turnpike at no charge to the station… (read more)

I have received a fine education from Midwood HS at Brooklyn College, BA in Psychology at Brooklyn College, and an MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Purdue University. These experiences served as a foundation to pique my interest in Grassroots Community Activism in Brooklyn.
I would like to see the day of when there are no longer a disputes about the importance of community radio. The station would be empowered with having a more inclusive and accessible station for persons with disabilities. The formulation of a program to provide a platform for persons with disabilities to discuss their initiatives, and the accessibility for them to be able to participate in other available programming would be an advancement toward inclusion… (read more)
I first got involved with the inner workings of WBAI in 2009, when 29-year WBAI veteran and then-current Program Director Bernard White was fired. The Justice and Unity Campaign played a key role in organizing listeners who supported Bernard’s work at the station and wanted to reverse his firing and a number of other anti-community measures that were taken at the time. I received their endorsement as LSB candidate in 2009 and joined the J & U slate for LSB elections in 2010… (read more)

I want you to know about the Pacifica policy on “Communications With Members” that monthly provides 1-hour on-air interactive access to information about how our governance works. Station management must also regularly communicate with listeners and staff.
I am committed to ensuring that WBAI and the rest of Pacifica stay on mission–challenging convention, bringing opponents together in search of resolutions, creating community on all sides of the microphone–for our children’s sake. All our children. And I believe that to do this we must make a deeper investment in how we work, and how we support and disagree with each other… (read more)

I have been a subscriber member, producer, paid staff member and volunteer at BAI. While in Cuba one of the many times I was there, I helped transmit a program from Radio Havana Cuba to BAI.
If elected to serve on the LSB, I would truly represent the listeners as that is what that elected position consists of. As a former producer, former paid staff member and someone who knows radio and how to do radio, I think its important to reach out to High Schools, Colleges and Universities and provide internships to students and in exchange those students would earn credit for their content and time spent at BAI…. Wouldn't a Partnership with MNN be a “Giveaway” or “Lease?”
In a fixed-term, carefully negotiated partnership with nonprofit Manhattan Neighborhood Network (not “Time Warner”), Pacifica would retain ownership & sign off on overall programming direction.
Can't WBAI Bootstrap its Way Out of its Longterm Financial Crisis?
WBAI lags years behind in embracing podcasting & other Internet advances. To succeed in competition with myriad high-tech media companies, WBAI needs the resources, finances, & youth involvement of a strong community institution like MNN.
Doesn't Indy/ACE Also Oppose the Sale or Swap of WBAI’s Signal?
Indy/ACE and their national allies took a $3+ million loan, due in 25 months, that explicitly includes the option of selling or swapping a station signal—& WBAI’s is the most valuable. A year has passed without a revenue-raising plan. If their dominance continues, the unacceptable outcome looms. ACE leader Steve Brown has publicly called for selling all 5 Pacifica signals “while they still have value.”
Radio stations like WBAI can go it alone, can't they?
WBAI & Pacifica are competing with hundreds of media companies. Internet radio is the fastest growing sector of radio, & many young people don’t even have a radio. WBAI’s webstream can accommodate only a few hundred listeners at a time. Where is the future for WBAI without young listeners?
