Inclusion on All Sides of the Microphone

It's time to be heard on a future for WBAI.

On Monday, Oct. 7, John Vernile, the most recent of many Pacifica Interim Executive Directors, showed up at WBAI with guards and what one of his co-conspirators described as "off-duty police." He shut down local programming, fired and locked out all but one staff member, and seized control of station bank accounts, programming and fundraising websites, and the broadcast transmitter.

He claimed in a press release that Pacifica will "rebuild" our station over an indefinite period. In the meantime, the perpetrators of this coup have made up something called "Pacifica Across America" and are feeding us pabulum programming, primarily from KPFA in Berkeley and KPFK in Los Angeles.

Some of us saw their intention a few years ago when Berkeley's Carole Spooner started calling for an "amicable divorce" and New York's Steve Brown urged selling off Pacifica's licenses "while they still have value."

We urged, then pleaded locally and nationally, for a consideration of a limited-term Public Service Operation Agreement (PSOA) — a negotiated contract that would allow WBAI, which at that time had lost 75% of its paid staff via layoffs, to increase its regional reach on radio and television, and raise funds for old debt while current expenses were fully borne by a community-oriented public access nonprofit funded by fees cable companies are legislated to pay for their use of the public's media facilities. Free Speech TV is operating under a similar agreement with Manhattan Neighborhood Network.

Tonight is the third consecutive night that some on the PNB will be spending trying to steam-clean their dirty maneuvers.

WRITE NOW to the Pacifica National Board and tell them "Hell No! We Won't Go!!" Tell them we won't let them steal the legacy of Samori Marksman, Elombe Brath, and other greats.
