Many of you may know me as co-producer and co-host along with Dr. Kamau Kokayi of “Global Medicine Review,” at noon on Wednesdays. Others may be familiar with my work as a published poet/performing artist and cultural advocate. As an educator, I possess more than 22 years of experience working hand in hand with other community leaders and artists in Brooklyn, New York to develop strategies for holistic methodologies, teaching practices and collaborative initiatives that focus on supporting our children, our families and our communities.
For me, WBAI represents a commonality with my own principles, those of serving the community, a commitment to the fair and equitable representation of its listenership and a fierce and authentic commitment to upholding the concerns of the people who work for and support this station’s longevity. We are here to serve the public, administer the highest quality of content and to represent the freedom inherent in fair and unbiased media that encourages its listenership to make educated and informed choices of their own as consumers.
It is quite clear to me that the only role for politics in this equation, is to enable each one of us to actively participate in the process of choosing people that represent our interests in order for our voices to be heard above the fray of partisanship and divisiveness.
There is much work to be done in our world, our communities and in our own backyards. Perhaps we can begin by empowering ourselves with the decisions we make. Acting in a conscious and responsible manner to carefully choose and elect representatives who mirror our vision for WBAI; a WBAI that represents the best that media has to offer today and ensures our efforts for collective success.
If by reading my statement, you are moved to support my bid for a seat on the local board as a write-in candidate, I thank you. Please also consider the staff candidacies of Louis Reyes Rivera, Bob Lederer and William Heerwagen.
