Inclusion on All Sides of the Microphone

We do not yet know the status of the WBAI LSB election.

On Friday, September 30, 2016, the election was supposed to have closed, but we are unsure about the status of things at WBAI.

Around the network, there was not an official announcement of the number of ballots initially mailed / emailed, so while we know the percentage of participation required – 10% of listeners and 25% of staff – we cannot say much about the actual numbers needed to have the elections certified. The bylaws say that if those percentages have not been reached by the deadline, the National Election Supervisor must extend the election, at her discretion, for up to four weeks.
We had been led to believe that WBAI listener membership was approximately 7,600, which would require 760 ballots, or one-tenth, to be returned. And, similarly, with staff membership of approximately 200, one-fourth, or 50, would have had to respond. But with additions and subtractions that took place during the election period, those numbers will have changed somewhat.

The date of the last published report on participation was Sept. 20, more than 10 days out from the stated deadline, when the pace always picks up: http://elections.pacifica.org/wordpress/a-note/voter-turnout/  Then, WBAI was reportedly at 661 listener voters and 29 staff; KPFA-Berkeley: 1834/57; WPFW-Washington, D.C.: 299/17; KPFK-Los Angeles: 1132/37; and Houston: 448/24.

Over the weekend, extensions have been announced at sister stations in Los Angeles (KPFK) until October 10, Houston (KPFT) until October 7, and Washington, DC (WPFW) until October 7.
