WBAI’s Justice and Unity Campaign invites you to the Homegoing Ceremony for our beloved brother, Kamau Khalfani, former producer and host of “Under the Learning Tree.”
Kamau, a student and teacher of African history and culture, revered his elders. He was devoted to his mother and was caring for her when a heart attack caused by blood clots felled him on Wednesday February 2nd.
You may offer your remembrances and support to her and his son: Mrs. Alma Lawrence, 505 West Broadway #111, Paterson, New Jersey 07522.
Kamau worked closely with Brother Elombe Brath on “Afrikaleidoscope” and was that program’s last host. He instructed teenagers of the Schomburg’s Center Young Scholars program and on his own time, instituted a Learning Tree internship program which trained scores of individuals of ages and backgrounds in the art of radio production. He also generously and with good humor shared his skills – and music collection – with colleagues at WBAI.
The area’s snowstorm forced the postponement of his customary Kwanzaa-Birthday December 27 celebration with friends and community members to January 1. He was 50.
Kamau last hosted “Under the Learning Tree” on WBAI in early September 2009.
