WBAI MANAGEMENT ACTS ON JUSTICE & UNITY MOTION TO MOVE FROM WALL STREET

Without acknowledgement, WBAI’s General Manager (GM) has begun to implement the major thrust of the board motion brought by Justice & Unity member and former Program Director (PD) Bernard White to move the station out of its pricey Wall Street digs and into more affordable temporary studios — which was rejected by the Steve Brown-led board majority in August. (For details, click here.)

It was six years ago, under PD White, that the station began a building fund – now disappeared and disavowed by the GM in spite of audit reports – in anticipation of the lease end date of December 2012. And its been only a few months since the GM and some of his staff publicly berated J&U, among whom are local board candidates in the current election, for suggesting that a move could happen within months and that the expiring lease should not be simply extended for 3 years as had been his declared intention.

In the station’s December 2012 newsletter, GM Berthold Reimers, who has maintained the arbitrary bans against White and other dissident BAI staff and listeners, announced that the station has “managed to secure studio space in Harlem…for a fraction of the $37,000” monthly Wall Street rent.

While this is a step that J&U urged and more than 200 listeners supported (in an online petition) as a necessary one toward the financial sustainability of WBAI, w cannot say that the manager is substantially reformed in other areas.

TOP JOBS IN PACIFICA OPEN

The Pacifica National Board majority, which bears some of the same personnel and a similar political posture as the one that led the failed local staff lockout at the Empire State Building and the without-due-process “transfer” of former GM Anthony Riddle and firing of former Program Director Bernard White in 2009, as well as the arbitrary firing and banning of more than a dozen other staff, found itself unable to continue its support for their hand-picked managers.  Therefore, the positions of Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer are open. Applications are being accepted until January 15, 2013.  Competence, integrity and a commitment to the Pacifica mission are key characteristics.
