1. WBAI Local Station Board Meeting – Wed. 8/12, 7pm
Join us at the Harlem ARC Senior Center, 120 West 140 St. btw. Malcolm X & Adam Clayton Powell Blvds., Harlem 10030. Closest trains: 2/3 to 135th Street near the Schomburg Center (http://is.gd/JAKf2x); subway stop has elevator.
Public Comment is always on the agenda. Come out and speak up!
Except for a brief interruption in the second half of 2012 for more than 6 years the station has had interims or no one serving in the Program Director position. Although the general consensus is that “No program direction = Death of a station”, for years the ACE board majority blocked the creation of a search committee for a permanent Program Director.
They’re still futzing around: boycotting meetings (May), feigning group amnesia (June),

and demonstrating democratic principles by choosing the committee’s staff reps themselves (July), but elections to the committee are on the meeting agenda, so please come out and help them get serious about the need to keep WBAI alive by growing it! (larger photos on next page and more)

2. Station and Local Board Updates
a. Give a Little More
The station’s summer fund drive has just ended. If you made a promise, please fulfill it ASAP. If you didn’t, there’s still time to contribute:
· Donate online: www.give2wbai.org OR
· Mail a check/money order to: WBAI, P.O. Box 30540, New York, NY 10087

b. Haiti’s Constant Struggle
After a hiatus, the Haiti show is back alternate Mondays at 9pm! It’s new name is Lanbi Call because of the way the conch shell was used to rally freedom-loving, enslaved Africans…
Contradicting the popular position taken by Dominicans regarding immigration to the US, the Supreme Court of the Dominican Republic ruled in 2013, that Haitian workers and worse, generations of Dominicans of actual and perceived Haitian ancestry would have to present their papers or get out of the country by July 2015. The retroactive de-nationalization and pending expulsions stem from the same denial and melanin-phobia that led to the 1937 Rafael Trujillo-sponsored massacre of Haitians that is commemorated in Edwidge Danticat’s “The Farming of Bones”.
On Friday, August 14, at 9am, join the Coalition for Human Rights in the Dominican Republic in a March and Rally from Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza (Eastern Pkwy & Flatbush – via 2,3,4,5 trains) to a Rally at NY City Hall (Chambers Street/Brooklyn Bridge – via J, M, Z, 4, 5, 6).

b. Inclusion on All Sides of the Microphone
When Pacifica revised its Bylaws more than a decade ago, it included committees to monitor each station’s representation of area communities. After extended dormancy, the WBAI Committee of Inclusion is functioning and you are invited to apply for membership beginning Tuesday, August 11. Please visit www.wbai.org
3. August is a Powerful Month
a. Emancipation

1807 marks the official end of the British trade in enslaved Africans but August 1834 marks the paper abolition of slavery. (This was almost 40 years before the US https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abolition_of_slavery_timeline would partially do so.) The Caribbean nations of Jamaica and Trinidad-Tobago took independence in August 1962.
b. Black August
Black August observation began with conscious Black men imprisoned in California as a way to honor the lives of Jonathan Jackson, George Jackson, and others.

4. Support CPRMetro.org (Community Progressive Radio – Online)
CPRMetro (http://cprmetro.org), the online station created by Bernard White and Don DeBar, fills important gaps in WBAI programming, including a progressive weekday international newscast, and coverage of live events including the 44-year old International African Arts Festival.
(Don DeBar also adds national and international news to the Morning Show on Wednesdays with Mimi Rosenberg as your host.)
CPR is a volunteer project, but the streaming and storage services cost money. Please donate: http://www.gofundme.com/fdbkoc
