6. WBAI Alumni
Despite our continuing differences with management over station operations and policies, we agree that the overused phrase fits: We need WBAI, now, more than ever.
While some of our neighbors are just awakening to the free pass from prosecution given to most police officers who engage in abuse and misconduct, and others are beginning to recognize the inherent conflict in local district attorneys investigating the police on whose work and testimony they ordinarily rely to prosecute civilians, WBAI’s listeners have long had a bird’s eye view of the problems with the system.
From the treatment of the work of police detective Frank Serpico, to coverage of the police killings of Nicholas Heyward, Michael Stewart, Anthony Baez, Hilton Vega, Patrick Dorismond, Amadou Diallo, and countless others locally and nationally; to the Dirty 30 (a drug-involved Harlem precinct); to the attempts to kill Larry Davis; and the violent abuse of Abner Louima, WBAI has regularly exposed corruption and dysfunction among those responsible for enforcing the law.
As non-commercial radio, providing you with tools for change is WBAI’s only “business.”
But there are costs involved.

Although the local board majority has not had even one of the required 10 Town Hall meeting in 5 years and they block discussion of the item at board meetings, we have information we want to share and we need to hear from more of you, so we’ll have a town hall meeting in the near future.

We cheer the growing nationwide mobilizations against the continual attacks by police on unarmed, mostly Black and brown people, against the lack of justice for the families and communities, and against the failure to demand accountability of the perpetrators.
And we maintain that there is no disconnect between legitimate demands for institutional change in police policies and practices and heartfelt sympathy for the families of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who like the families of Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Rahmarley Graham, Akai Gurley, and others (including the reported shooter, Ismaaiyl Brinsley) lost their loved ones in sudden and painful ways. We reject efforts by those who would use the killing of the policemen to weaken the justice movement by posing a false equivalency between civil protest and murder, and by corrupting mourning with police impunity for unjustifiable acts.
